Hang a plate or a gripper off the end and every stroke works the rod sideways in its bearing, which shows up as a leaking rod seal within months. The MGP carries that load on two guide rods running in their own bearings, so the piston rod only pushes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eReplacing an MGPM25-40\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSMC discontinued the original MGP in April 2012 and replaced it with MGP-Z. The Z generation shortened the guide rods by up to 22 mm and thinned the plates, cutting up to 24% from the mass — so the installed depth behind the cylinder is less than the old unit needed.
