Where a main line filter goes
Machine-level filters are sized for one set of valves and cylinders. A main line unit sits at the compressor room outlet or at the entry to a building, and has to pass the whole plant demand without creating pressure drop. Undersizing here is expensive in a way that is hard to trace — every machine downstream runs a little low and nobody knows why.
Filtration and drainage
The filter separates bulk water and solid particles carried over from the compressor and the receiver. On a main line the collected volume is significant, so the drain arrangement matters as much as the element — an auto drain is usually specified rather than manual.
