Rack and pinion versus vane
A vane actuator turns a shaft with a single blade — compact and backlash-free, but limited in torque. A rack and pinion converts the thrust of a piston through a gear, so the available torque scales with bore and the shaft can carry a real load. At size 100 this is a unit for turning fixtures, flipping heavy parts and driving indexing tables, not for small jigs.
Cushioning matters at this size
Ten kilograms of actuator turning a load through 190° stores significant energy. The adjustable cushion needles decelerate the rack before it reaches the stop, which protects both the actuator and whatever it is driving. Setting them is part of commissioning, not an option — running an uncushioned unit of this size into its stops will break something.
What the Z generation changed
Mass reduced by up to 14%, cushion needle adjustment made easier, and small auto switches (D-M9 type) can now be mounted on two faces and fitted from the front rather than from the side.
