The built-in strainer
Pilot operated valves fail from dirt in the pilot passage far more often than from wear in the main valve. A strainer at the pilot inlet catches that debris, which is why this series survives on plant air that is not as clean as the specification assumes. It is the difference between a valve that lasts years and one that sticks after a few months.
Vacuum service
The external pilot version can be used on vacuum, since the pilot pressure is supplied separately rather than taken from the main line. On an internal pilot valve there is nothing to drive the pilot when the main port is under vacuum.
Full-wave rectifier for AC coils
AC versions carry a built-in rectifier, which removes the hum and the inrush behaviour of a plain AC coil and makes switching quieter and more consistent.
