SMC MGPM25-40Z — MGP-Z series guided compact cylinder, ø25 bore with 40 mm stroke, slide bearing guide. Two guide rods carry the side load instead of the piston rod. This is the current replacement for the discontinued MGPM25-40.

Why a guided cylinder
A plain cylinder rod is made to take axial load. Hang a plate or a gripper off the end and every stroke works the rod sideways in its bearing, which shows up as a leaking rod seal within months. The MGP carries that load on two guide rods running in their own bearings, so the piston rod only pushes.
Replacing an MGPM25-40
SMC discontinued the original MGP in April 2012 and replaced it with MGP-Z. The Z generation shortened the guide rods by up to 22 mm and thinned the plates, cutting up to 24% from the mass — so the installed depth behind the cylinder is less than the old unit needed. Check the drawing before ordering, since that dimensional change is exactly what can catch out a like-for-like swap.
Slide bearing or ball bushing
The M suffix is the slide bearing version: higher load capacity, more tolerant of shock and contamination. The L version uses ball bushings for lower friction at higher speeds. Pick by whether the duty is heavy or fast.
