Description
SMC MY1B32-420Z — MY1B-Z series mechanically jointed rodless cylinder, ø32 bore with 420 mm stroke, basic type. The carriage is coupled to the piston through a slot in the tube, so the installed length is roughly the stroke plus the end caps.

Why rodless
A rod cylinder needs its stroke length again behind the body for the rod to retract into — 840 mm of machine for 420 mm of travel. A rodless cylinder keeps the moving element inside the tube, which on a long transfer is usually what decides whether the axis fits the frame at all.
What the Z generation changed
- Mass reduced by 17% against the previous MY1B
- Auto switches can be fitted from the front even at the groove positions, so a switch can be added without dismantling the axis
- Dust seal band retention changed to magnetic holding, which keeps the band seated better over long strokes — on a 420 mm unit that is where contamination gets in
- Mounting dimensions unchanged from the previous series
The dust seal band
A rodless cylinder has a slot running the length of the tube, closed by a steel band that the carriage lifts as it passes. That band is the weak point of the design: if it lifts or wanders, dust enters and the seal fails. The magnetic retention in this generation addresses exactly that, which matters more the longer the stroke.
