Bowl shape and anti-slip surface
A flat pad only works on a flat face. The bowl form seats against curved and domed work — bottles, pressed panels, castings — where a flat pad would leak at the edge. The anti-slip surface then stops the part rotating or sliding under acceleration, which is what usually goes wrong when a curved part is lifted quickly.
What the buffer does
The buffer is a sprung shaft behind the pad. The head can descend past the contact point without driving the pad into the work, and the 50 mm stroke covers height variation across a stack or between parts without re-teaching the position.

Handling bottles, containers, pressed panels and castings — anywhere the gripping surface is not flat.
