A 1/4" hex shank cannot carry full 1/2"-drive torque; it is for running fasteners, not breaking tight bolts.
A bit adapter that lets a 1/4" hex-shank driver or impact driver turn 1/2" square-drive sockets. It is useful in maintenance and assembly work when only a hex-chuck driver is at hand.
